Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a significant public health issue in Mexico. AURKA is involved in cell cycle regulation and contributes to the development and progression of CRC. Variants in the AURKA gene have been linked to cancer progression and susceptibility. Objective: The aim of the study was to analyze the association between rs2273535 and rs1047972 of the AURKA gene and the risk of CRC in Mexican patients. Materials and methods: Analytical cross-sectional study, genotyping using restriction fragment length polymorphisms. Genotypic and allelic frequencies were determined by direct counting. To compare genotypic, allelic, and haplotypic distributions, the Chi-square test was used. For the association analysis, the risks of alleles and genotypes were estimated by odds ratio with 95% confidence intervals. Haplotypes were inferred with a Bayesian algorithm. Linkage disequilibrium was measured using D´ and r2. The in silico analysis was done using the PolyPhen-2 and SIFT platforms. Results: No variant was found to be associated with CRC or to impact protein function. Conclusions: The genotypic and allelic frequencies of the two variants of AURKA are reported for the 1st time in Mexican patients with CRC. No association was found between variants and risk for CRC.
