Latin America is one of the regions in the world with the lowest investment in Research and Development. Although the number of articles published in Nephrology and of formally trained research professionals have increased in recent years in our region, a much greater effort is still needed to place research in our specialty at a much higher level than it currently has, and which it deserves given that it is a region with one of the highest rates of incidence and prevalence, and with the highest mortality and burden of chronic kidney disease in the world. It is necessary to prioritize research in Nephrology with greater investment, reduction of bureaucracy and promotion of international collaboration. It is also necessary to reduce inequalities in infrastructure and access to research resources in the region, as well as to provide the necessary conditions to prevent the brain drain to other countries. Generating cutting-edge research in Nephrology would help us to solve, with our own solutions, the serious problem of kidney disease that afflicts our countries.
